Just a few miles outside Paphos is the village of Yeroskipou that has a rich history dating back to earliest times.The village name means 'Sacred garden', and in ancient times this area was covered with fragrant roses and pomegranate trees and was a welcome resting place for pilgrims on their way from the old port at Paphos to the temple of Aphrodite at Palaea Paphos {now Kouklia}.
Although the scared gardens of Aphrodite have long gone, the village is still a very interesting one, with places of interest for visitors of all ages.
A very rare and beautiful church...In the centre of the village stands the beautiful five-domed Byzantine church dedicated to Ayia Paraskevi - a 2nd century martyr. This church is one of only two five-domed churches in Cyprus and was built in the 11th century. Visitors are welcome to go inside and of course there is no charge, but a donation in the collection box is always appreciated and it is possible to buy candles to light for someone special -either in their memory, or because they need help of some kind. Amongst the beautiful icons can be found an important 15th century icon of Our Lady, which is unique in the fact that it is portable and double-sided with Our Lady and Child on one side and a later painting of The Crucifixion on the reverse - probably painted in the late 16th century..
